Fostering Information

Information about fostering

Fostering is a way of providing family life to children and young people, who are unable to live with their parents, by looking after a Child or Young Person in your own home. Foster carers play an important role in providing a safe, secure, and stable environment to these children and young people.

There are many reasons why a child or young person would need to be fostered. Some children come into care for a short period, for example, the family may experience a crisis or a parent may experience a temporary problem with their health. Some children and young people have a disability and their family may need support. Other children and young people come into care for longer periods, particularly when a child or young person’s welfare is undermined by more serious issues, such as persistent parent drug/alcohol misuse, domestic violence, neglect or abuse of the child/young person.

Why become a foster carer?

Being a foster carer is rewarding, but it can also be challenging.

As a foster carer, you will need to be able to provide the time, attention and space for the child or young person within the home. We are aware that it is not an easy decision to foster.

That is why we provide a comprehensive 24-hour-a-day support package, advice, guidance, information, and training to all our foster carers.

You do not need any specific qualifications to become a Foster Carer, however, you do need to have the right skills, qualities and attributes, some of which include being empathetic, playful, patient, flexible, kind, understanding, and curious about children’s experiences.

Having some experience of caring for children and knowledge of child development is desirable. You must be a good communicator, be able to work as part of a team and have an excellent sense of humour.
